Skybreak Royale — Season 6: Paper Tide adds a new island, a reworked glider, and a charity week

LISBON — Paperlight Games today launched Season 6 of Skybreak Royale, titled Paper Tide. The season adds Driftmarket, a coastal island built around tidal water that rises and falls over the course of a match, changing which routes are walkable and which have to be flown.

Paper Tide also ships the glider rework the studio has been testing publicly since June. Gliders now hold speed through turns rather than bleeding it, and updrafts have been made visible from further away. The change is live in all three regions from today.

The season opens with Kite Week, a seven-day event running 11–18 August. Paperlight will donate the proceeds from the event's cosmetic bundle to a Lisbon-based youth arts charity, and will publish the total afterwards.

Paperlight Games brings Cerberus anti-cheat to Skybreak Royale across all three regions

LISBON — Paperlight Games today began rolling out Cerberus anti-cheat to Skybreak Royale in all three of the game's supported regions: US-East, EU-West and AP-Southeast. The studio's previous arrangement gave it solid backend coverage in North America only, which meant reports from players in Western Europe and Southeast Asia could sit unactioned for days.

Under the new setup, detection runs close to the match server in each region rather than in one place, so packet-integrity checks and cross-player correlation happen where the match is actually played. On the player's machine, Cerberus runs as a kernel-mode driver that loads when Skybreak Royale launches and unloads when the game exits; it does not run in the background when the game is closed. Cerberus is currently in closed beta, and Paperlight is rolling the change out region by region over the coming weeks.

"For three years we have effectively shipped two different games: one in North America where reports got dealt with, and one everywhere else where players had to wait and hope. That is not a difficulty setting, it is a fairness problem, and it was ours to fix. Putting detection in every region we run servers in is the honest version of what we should have done at launch."

— Devon Okafor, Technical Director, Paperlight Games

Paperlight says it will report on how the change is going once there is enough data to say something useful, rather than at the end of the rollout. Details of what the anti-cheat does and when it runs are listed on the game's Steam page and in the studio's privacy summary.

Paperlight Games moves to a larger studio in Lisbon's Marvila district

LISBON — Paperlight Games has moved into a new studio on Rua do Açúcar in Marvila, Lisbon, after five years in a converted flat in Alcântara that the team had comfortably outgrown.

The new space roughly doubles the studio's floor area and, for the first time, gives the art team a dedicated room for the paper, scanners and cutting mats that the studio's look depends on. It also includes a small recording booth, ending a long-running arrangement in which audio work was done in a wardrobe.

Headcount is unchanged at 29, and the studio says the move is not a prelude to expansion. Post is now accepted at the Marvila address; the previous address is no longer monitored.

Paperlight Games and the Margem Arts Programme launch a schools workshop series

LISBON — Paperlight Games has partnered with the Margem Arts Programme, a non-profit arts education initiative operating in the Lisbon metropolitan area, on a series of free workshops for students aged 12 to 16.

The workshops cover the studio's actual production process: cutting and scanning paper, turning a scan into a game texture, and getting a simple object moving on screen. Six sessions are planned for the 2025–26 school year, hosted at partner schools with two Paperlight staff attending each one on paid work time.

No commercial content, storefront or in-game promotion is involved. Materials produced for the workshops will be published under a permissive licence so that teachers can run the sessions themselves afterwards.
